The Return of the Estate Tax

NB: This article was published on January 1, 2010 and contains information that is outdated but included on this website for historical context. For current information regarding the estate tax, read: Does Every Estate Have to Pay an Estate Tax?

As I mentioned in Monday’s article, opponents of the estate tax are suggesting that if Congress does not address the estate tax in 2010, people with infirm family members will be considering tax law when making life or death decisions at the end of the year.

Last week, comedian Stephen Colbert mocked the estate tax opponents saying that by not stopping the estate tax from returning as scheduled:

“…we’re just punishing all those innocent, God-fearing people who are willing to kill Nana for the extra cash.”

What do you think? Do you think life or death decisions will be made on the basis of tax law? Let me know by commenting below.
